What's Cooking?

First and foremost, I want to thank the great guys from 000webhost.com for their excellent and free webhosting service.

I've taken the big step forward by finally getting the Everex Cloudbook with XP for compatibility reasons. Even though there are some downsides to the machine, the bottom line is that I am very glad I bought it and I wouldn't want to trade it for any other machine. It accompanies me everywhere I go. Here's what living with the Cloudbook looks like to me.

With the Cloudbook always handy, I've begun shopping for a capable "scrapbook" type software. Some kind of software to keep track of everything, stuff, people, ideas, things I read somewhere, and everything else too. I like the way outliners work, so I am test driving the commercialware-turned-freeware information manager EccoPro.

Whereas that's all great fun, my next rent payment is due way too soon, and I've run out of money again, so it's time to gear up and get to work on a real money maker. Since there's not alot of time left, I need to be extremely productive. What shall I use as my development tool? REBOL 3 isn't out yet, so I appear to be stuck

That's what was on my mind, when, as if to answer my question, I got yet another email from the Alpha Software guys (which they've been sending me regularly for the last ten years or so, trying to get me to buy their product), offering me their Alpha Five database development software at a highly discounted price as a same-day special offer. Very tempting, but I'm broke. So, I sent them a reply to hold the price for me. I was surprised by their response, saying they'd freeze the price for me. I installed their 30-day demo, and I'm off to work on my secret project (No, it's not an outliner ;-).

About the techscribe

The techscribe has been designing and implementing software for close to thirty years. His voyages through techland have taken him from Digital Equipment Corporations' mini computers (VAX running VMS), via IBM PCs and MS DOS, Mac Plus, The Apple Quadra, Sun workstations (both Motorola 680X0 based as well as Sparc), the Next cube, all the way to Intel based machines, such as the Altos running Xenix, SCO Xenix, Interactive Unix, FreeBSD, Linux, as well as MS Windows 3.0 through XP.

Software has been implemented using different programming languages, including Assembler, C, Objective C, C++, C#, Java, Forth, Pascal, Turbo Pascal, Modula, Oberon, Smalltalk, Scheme, J, and others. Some of the scripting languages I have utilized are Javascript, REBOL, Perl, PHP, Ch, SATL, and Tcl/Tk.

Current Interests

While I continue to implement business applications and an occassional Website (mostly server side processing), I am currently experimenting with software for voice recognition, implemented in C++ and Prolog.
